Position Description:

Plan and perform a normal range of rough and finish turning, drilling, tapping, boring, facing, recessing, thread cutting and similar machining operations on a variety of shafts, housings heads, and parts of various ferrous and non-ferrous metals and alloys.

 

Work from drawings, route sheets, specifications and instructions to determine operational sequence; set tools in cross slides or tail stock; select and set speeds and feeds according to the type of material and finish requirements; move selector lever or change gears for thread cutting.

 

Key Responsibilities/Complexities:

  • Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as Mills, Lathes, saws or grinders.
  • Measure, examine, and test completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.
  • Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and Vernier calipers. 
  • Set up, adjust, and operate all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools in order to perform precision machining operations.  Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.  Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
  • Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work. 
  • Assure that work areas and equipment are maintained in clean and orderly condition; report and correct any unsafe work practices or conditions immediately.
  • Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures.

 

Competencies:

  • Must be able to calculate decimals and fractions; perform basic arithmetic calculations.
  • Must be able to read blueprints.
  • Knowledge of cutting methods, tooling, and cutting qualities of metals.
  • Working knowledge of MAPICS and MS Office. 
  • Possess good communication and interpersonal skills; be able to independently solve problems while interacting with various teams and teammates on daily processes and flow. 
  • Must be capable of multi-tasking various duties throughout the day, have a positive attitude with an ability to be versatile and flexible.

Initiative/Ingenuity:

Requires considerable judgement to plan work, make exacting set-ups, determine cause of any malfunctions, operate machine and check work.  Requires ability to run many different machines.

 

Supervisory/Responsibility:

Works under direct supervision; responsible for own work only.

 

Reports To:

Machine Shop Supervisor

 

Work Environment:

The Machinist II works in an indoor environment.  Exposure to shop elements but not continuously to the extent of being disagreeable. 

 

Physical Demands:

The employee may be required to stand, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds unassisted and greater than 50 pounds with assistance.  Continuous mental and visual attention is necessary to perform various duties requiring constant alertness and activity.

 

Responsibility – Equipment/Materials:

Improper use/operation of equipment or thoughtlessness/inattention while handling materials may result in extensive damage to the equipment and injuries and lost time to the employee or others.  Improper set-up or operation or failure to check work may result in losses through rework or scrappage of materials.

 

Safety:

All safety regulations must be observed.

 

Position Type:

This is a regular, full-time position with frequent overtime.  All candidates must be willing to work overtime.

 

Travel:
No travel is expected for this position.

 

Required Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED. Typically requires 2-4 years’ machining experience including, but not limited to, set up and operation of various machine tools.

 

Other Duties:

Perform various other similar or associated duties as assigned or directed.
